Cities Near Grand Canyon

Bruce A. 10-2-24

What an amazing day with "Canyon Cody"! My wife and I had Cody as our guide for a private day-long [Canyon Dave] tour. Cody has an in-depth knowledge of pretty much everything canyon related; the geology, the archeology, the plants, the indigenous people, and things we have already forgotten. We have used guides at several parks, Cody was five star with us!

Grand Canyon Tours from Sedona

2+ Hours to Grand Canyon

Sedona red rocks scene

With great scenery and tourist attractions, Sedona is the high-end gorgeous town of Arizona. Of the towns near the Grand Canyon, Sedona is farthest away, over two hours. However, it is truly among the most beautiful cities in America. There is epic scenery and hiking, world-class shopping, great resorts and restaurants, and warmer climate.

San Francisco
Peaks on Grand Canyon tours from Flagstaff

Flagstaff is the largest of the cities around Grand Canyon, with Northern Arizona University. Amenities are diverse, including many hotels, restaurants, cultural activities and outdoor opportunities.

Flagstaff is a wonderful city surrounded by ponderosa pine forests, many trails, and the highest mountains in Arizona, the San Francisco Peaks.

Grand Canyon Tours from Williams AZ

1 Hour to Grand Canyon

Downtown Williams Arizona
								on Historic Route 66

Williams is tiny and has beautiful lakes and cheaper (but very nice) hotels and BnB's. There are a few good restaurants, too.

You will enjoy the small-town events, like the funny cowboy shoot-outs each summer evening. Williams is a famous Route 66 stop. Bearizona is a wonderful drive-thru wildlife park. There is a train from Williams to Grand Canyon!

Tours from Tusayan or Grand Canyon Village

Happy guests
on a Grand Canyon tour from nearby Tusayan

Book early for hotel and campground space in or near the park. Hotels in Grand Canyon Village, which is right near the South Rim of the canyon, are run by consessionaires accustomed to busy crowds and rustic hotels.

The town of Tusayan is right at the south entrance to the park, a 15 minute drive to the rim (plus some wait time at the gate). Tusayan hotels are generally more modern than those in the park.

Tours from Campgrounds

0 to 2 Hours to Grand Canyon

The KOA on Highway 64

Our favorite nearby campground is the KOA on highway 64, just north of Williams, AZ. From here you can access all the beautiful scenery and activities near Williams. Kaibab Lake is very close. In Williams you might enjoy the wonderful Bearizona drive-through zoo. There is a fun Canyon Coaster that all ages of "kids" will enjoy. Williams restaurants are quite nice, too.

What are local campgrounds like?

Best Grand Canyon Town

The Grand Canyon Village, in the park, has a fluctuating local population of about 2,000 people, more in the summer. These include the rangers and their families, maintenance and campground employees, the restaurant staff, and the hotel staff.

El Tovar Hotel on the South Rim of Grand Canyon

This is the El Tovar, the aging queen of national park hotels, and right on the South Rim. There are six hotels within the park, all requiring booking almost a year in advance. These are: El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Yavapai Lodge, Kachina Lodge, and Thunderbird Lodge.

These hotels are listed more or less in order of our preference—your opinions will vary. For example, the out-of-date, dorm-like Kachina and Thunderbird are right on the rim.

The nicer Maswik and Yavapai require a short walk (Maswik) or a short free bus ride (Yavapai). At the park entrance you will be given a map of the Grand Canyon Village.

But you can't really beat the ancient El Tovar!

Important note:

Phoenix and Las Vegas are probably too far away for starting cities--just the driving is 8-10 hours round trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which city is closest to the Grand Canyon?

Grand Canyon Village is inside the National Park.

Tusayan is about a 15-minute drive to the rim.

Williams is about 1 hour away.

Flagstaff is about 1.5 hours.

Sedona is about 2.5 hours.

Is it better to stay in Flagstaff or Williams?

It depends on what you enjoy. Flagstaff is a lively university city with diverse restaurants, hotels, hiking, and cultural activities. Williams is a tiny, charming Route 66 town with a relaxed feel. Both are great bases for a Canyon Dave Tour — Canyon Dave Tours picks up from both.

Can Canyon Dave Tours pick up from Sedona?

We don't offer pickup from Sedona directly, as it adds significant driving time to an already full day. However you can drive up to Flagstaff and meet us there for pickup. Give us a call (877) 845-3283 and we can discuss the best option for your situation.

Is there lodging inside Grand Canyon National Park?

Yes — there are six hotels inside the park, including the historic El Tovar right on the South Rim. They book up nearly a year in advance, so reserve early. The very close town of Tusayan, just outside the park entrance, has more modern hotels that are easier to book.

How far is Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon?

Las Vegas is about 4.5 hours from the Grand Canyon South Rim — that's 9 hours of driving in a single day on top of a full Canyon tour. We recommend staying in Flagstaff, Williams, or Tusayan, to get the most out of your visit.
