Children Present Grand Canyon Geology to Everyone

Get ready for hands-on learning! We love the young kids and we play games with them as we teach them. First we pass out our bags of Grand Canyon rocks. The children and adults alike learn some interesting stories of the Grand Canyon rock layers or "strata". Then you and your children will place each rock sample where it goes on your colorful (and proprietary!) take-home handouts.

You and your kids will learn of the four chapters of Grand Canyon geologic history and the kids will be invited to act out each chapter, to the delight of everyone. This is always a memorable (and hilarious) activity.

A child learning about fossils

This tour is 4 hours long, though by your choice (and the kids' attention span), you may lengthen it and continue to more viewpoints. However, the older kids aged about 8-12 (and you) will enjoy more our Ultimate Full Day Tour. You know best, so choose which fun tour is for you.

As we walk the safe paths (that are not too close to the edge!), the kids have tons to see and do. This is when we learn about the trees and play the fun Mushroom and Hot Lava games. The Mushroom Game includes tiny toddlers.

Climbing children conquer the hill

For our drives between viewpoints, we have wildlife pictures and children's books on interesting topics to keep them busy and happy. Your guide gives his or her explanations of animals, plants and history in a way that kids can easily understand, without over-simplifying, so the adults are also well-informed.

Your family vacation is special and important to you, and to us. We pride ourselves in providing an immensely enjoyable day for everyone, both young and old. So if you want to visit the Grand Canyon with kids, please do join us!

Children hunting for fossils

This is the Grand Canyon's first tour designed especially for young families! You parents can even enjoy the marvelous Grand Canyon with infants.

Now we will walk the path to the fossil site, where you will find dozens of shells of the sea creatures that lived here so long ago. Each child will have his or her own colorful guide and can check off the fossils as they find them. We end the morning with a quiet time near the beautiful canyon. If the kids aren't too tired, we can all grab a sandwich (on your own) and then your guide will drive you to additional viewpoints along the East Rim Road.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Families Tour?

The tour is approximately 4 hours long. By your choice — and the kids' attention span — you can lengthen it and continue to additional viewpoints along the East Rim Road.

What ages is this tour best for?

This tour is designed for children ages 0 to about 8. For older kids aged about 6 to 12, our Ultimate Full Day Tour is a better fit — more viewpoints, a geology talk, lunch included, and a longer day of exploration. You know your kids best, so choose whichever tour suits your family.

Where does the tour pick up?

The Families Tour picks up at any hotel, lodge, or campground at the Grand Canyon South Rim and Tusayan. Unlike our Full Day Tour, we do not pick up from Flagstaff or Williams for this shorter tour.

Is lunch included?

Lunch is not included on the Families Tour, but we provide healthy snacks and a variety of beverages throughout. If the kids aren't too tired at the end, you can grab a sandwich on your own before heading to additional viewpoints.

Can we bring a baby or toddler?

Absolutely — this is the Grand Canyon's only tour designed with the very youngest visitors in mind. Infants and toddlers are welcome. The paths we walk are safe, and we always keep a comfortable distance from the rim. The Mushroom Game is especially designed for tiny toddlers.
